There is healing in understanding how we come to be who we are.

Looking inward is often difficult, but it can open up the possibility of living more fully, more freely, and more authentically.

In-Person Counselling, Psychotherapy, and other services for adults in North Wicklow and South County Dublin

Counselling

Counselling provides a supportive space to make sense of difficulties that may be affecting your everyday life and sense of wellbeing. Whether you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, loss, relationship difficulties or uncertainty about an important decision, counselling offers an opportunity to explore your feelings, gain clarity about your circumstances and consider what you need to move forward.

Counselling is generally brief – a few weeks or months and aims to help people build new coping skills and regain emotional balance.

Counselling is a supportive starting point for navigating life’s immediate challenges, and one that often opens the door to deeper self-reflection. In that space, the insights you gain while working through a present difficulty may reveal deeply rooted patterns or past experiences that need closer attention. When this happens, the work naturally evolves from short-term counselling into psychotherapy, allowing you to safely explore and heal those underlying layers.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to explore how earlier experiences, relationships and ways of coping may continue to influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, often without us being fully aware of their impact. These influences can shape how we understand ourselves, relate to others and manage our emotions.

Psychotherapy looks beyond immediate difficulties to explore recurring emotional and relationship patterns, prolonged grief, and the underlying experiences that may be contributing to distress in the present.

This deeper exploration often takes place over several months, sometimes longer, allowing time for greater self-understanding, emotional growth and meaningful, lasting change.

Other Services

Alongside counselling and psychotherapy, I also offer Bio-Energy Therapy as a separate service.

Bio-energy therapy is a holistic, complementary, non-invasive approach to wellness, based on the principle that the human body is surrounded by and infused with an invisible network of energy, often referred to as a biofield or life-force.

In good emotional and physical health, this energy flows freely. However, illness, emotional trauma, or prolonged stress can cause energy to become blocked or sluggish. Bio-energy therapy aims to locate and release these blockages, supporting the body’s natural capacity to heal.

People come to bio-energy therapy for a variety of reasons. Many seek relief from stress, tension, chronic pain, medically unexplained symptoms, or illness, while others hope to explore emotional wellbeing, mental clarity or a greater sense of connection with themselves. Some are simply curious about energy-based approaches to whole health.

Sessions consist of a sequence of hand movements worked outside the body to encourage the clearing of blockages across the seven main energy centres (chakras). Following an initial consultation, a session typically includes an opening scan, clearing and balancing, grounding and closing, followed by space for feedback. Clients remain fully clothed, removing only footwear and heavy jewellery or accessories. Sessions are generally conducted standing but can be adapted to sitting or lying according to your need. Minimal light touch may occasionally be used. Each session works progressively deeper than the last, with the final session bringing the series to a settled, grounded close.

Bio-energy therapy is a complementary therapy and not a substitute for medical advice or care. Clients have noted improvements in allergies, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, backache, depression, migraine, pain, skin conditions, sleep difficulties, stress levels, tension headaches, and more.

Treatment consists of four consecutive weekly sessions, followed by a review session one month later. Sessions last 50 to 60 minutes and cost €80.

Meg Cooney smiling outdoors on a bright day

Hello, I’m Meg

I am a holistic and trauma-informed counsellor/psychotherapist with 15 years’ experience working in complementary therapies and a pre-accredited member of the IACP. I am interested in how our early experiences and relationships shape the ways we come to understand ourselves, relate to others and experience our bodies.

I work from the belief that people heal through authenticity, by understanding the forces that shaped them, by shedding imposed roles and expectations, and by developing compassion for the parts of themselves formed in the absence of safety. I work in an attuned, warm, and steady way, guided always by each client’s capacity for challenge and curiosity.

Alongside established therapeutic perspectives, my work is at times informed by an ongoing academic interest in the chakra system as a framework for understanding aspects of human development and embodied experience.

This does not mean that the chakra framework is introduced into therapy as a matter of course. Therapy is led by you and by what is meaningful and relevant to your own experience.

Your questions,
welcomed.

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you need more information, I am happy to help.

Ask a question
What is counselling/psychotherapy?

Counselling/psychotherapy is a safe, therapeutic space to explore thoughts, beliefs, feelings, behaviours, and/or experiences that interfere with your capacity to enjoy life.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Although the terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably, they differ slightly in terms of the scope, length, and depth of the exploration.

Counselling helps with what’s happening in your life right now — stress, decisions, transitions, or overwhelm. It’s usually short‑term and supports coping, clarity, and emotional balance.

Psychotherapy goes deeper. It explores long‑standing patterns, past experiences, and the roots of emotional difficulty. It’s usually longer‑term and supports meaningful, lasting change.

What can I expect from an initial consultation?

The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to begin exploring what has brought you to seek therapy. During the call, we will get our first sense of each other and whether or not we might work well together. The fit is very important, and central to the success of the process. As such, there is no obligation to continue if you feel I am not the right therapist for you.

Likewise, where I feel I may not be best suited to meet your needs, I will advise you of this and offer you a referral where possible.

What can I expect in our first session?

The first session is a little different from other sessions. After welcoming you and before beginning the work itself, we will spend a little time on your intake, our contract, and the terms of the work, whereupon you can ask for further clarification if necessary. Remember, the fit is very important, and in this first session, you have another opportunity to determine whether I am the right therapist for you.

Once you are happy to proceed, I will invite you to tell me what’s going on for you. Arriving with a clear idea of where to begin is not necessary. We can begin with what you know, and I will take time to understand your needs through gentle questions.

How often will we meet?

We will meet weekly. Regular weekly sessions provide consistency, help build a strong therapeutic relationship, and create the continuity needed for meaningful and lasting change.

Will everything I share remain confidential?

Confidentiality in counselling means that what you say in session stays private. However, it is important to know that there are specific legal and safety expectations where a therapist must share information to protect lives and comply with the law.

Confidentiality must be broken …

(i) if there are any serious, grounded beliefs that a client may cause imminent, severe harm to themselves or others.

(ii) following a disclosure of current risk/harm to children or vulnerable persons, or a disclosure of retrospective harm to children or vulnerable persons where a perpetrator is known to still have access to other children or vulnerable persons.

(iii) if requested by law under a valid court mandate.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of counselling sessions varies from person to person. It depends on your goals, the nature of what you’re facing, and how often you attend. Some people find a few sessions helpful for immediate stress or life changes, while others continue for several months as they build coping skills and emotional balance.

Therapy is flexible, we review your progress together and adjust the duration as needed, ensuring the work supports you in the most helpful way.

How do I know when the time has come to end therapy?

Knowing when to end therapy is a very personal decision. It is usually based on achieving your initial goals, feeling more able to manage challenges on your own, experiencing lasting relief from your symptoms, or noticing a shift in the therapy dynamic away from deep, focused, emotional work. These are positive signs that you are ready to finish and will likely be obvious to both you and me.

There are other signs that therapy has run its course for you, and while these can feel awkward, they are best addressed openly. You may feel you’ve hit a plateau, your needs/goals may require a different specialist, or you may feel a mismatch that prevents you from engaging deeply in your own process.
